How did we help a FTSE 250 soft drinks firm on their food safety and quality improvement journey?

Challenge:
A new clause in global food safety standard, BRC 8, requires food business operators to “define and maintain a clear plan for the development and continuing improvement of a food safety and quality culture”.

Food safety and quality have always been high priorities for A.G. Barr, however Instinctif Partners was asked to support A.G. Barr in bringing their activities together into a cohesive and targeted improvement plan.

Action:
We began by developing an employee survey focused solely on food safety and quality culture and encompassing topics such as empowerment, reward & recognition, reporting, training and communication. All employees were invited to complete it.

Alongside the survey we interviewed the company’s factory and quality managers to obtain qualitative insight on food safety culture from their perspectives.

We then reported back both the quantitative and qualitative findings, highlighting areas for focus.

Using the findings of the report A.G. Barr developed an improvement plan for each of its sites, which we reviewed against best practice.

Result:
The company now has a detailed and robust food safety and quality improvement plan to fulfil the requirement of the BRC standard.

The actions set out in the plan are in the process of being implemented across the company’s sites.

The findings of the employee survey and qualitative interviews provide a benchmark against which progress can be measured. The survey will now become an annual initiative.

Whilst food safety and quality were already key focus areas for the business, the culture project provided an opportunity to re-examine and re-prioritise activities.
