Retailers Against Smuggling

How can we bring issues around smuggling to the political fore?

Challenge:
How can we bring the issue of smuggling to the political and public fore amongst the noise of Brexit using new tools and techniques?

Action:
We delved into the current legislation that relates to smuggling and the illicit trade and found a gap in legislation.  We drafted a Bill that would make it an one-the-spot finable offence to purchase illicit alcohol, tobacco or solid fuel from a unregistered retailer and lobbied politicians on the same.

Result:
Our advocacy efforts led to Fianna Fáil, the country’s second largest party, introducing our Bill in the Dáil the process of which is ongoing.  It has also allowed us to create an media angle leading to national coverage for RAS.
