Qualitative Research – Consumer Technology

Practice Area: Insight & Research

Location: London: Truth

Truth Consulting

We are marketing strategists. We work at the intersection of culture and commerce to create change, specialising in brand, innovation and business strategy. We are a naturally collaborative, global partner, with an emphasis on expansive thinking, a reverence for richness of insight and the creative flair to deliver commercial impact. We let the nature of the project and our clients’ needs guide our approach. At the heart of everything we do, though, is the idea of ‘insight as a creative act’. Our diverse team of specialists seek to bring the widest range of sources and methods to any problem, helping us find new connections, create new ways of seeing people’s worlds and generate practical applications for this truth.

Role Overview:

For this particular role, we’re looking for an intelligent, interesting individual with experience in consumer technology and ideally health, and an enthusiasm for these sectors/topics.  This role would be primarily to work with a consumer technology client, but is likely to include other clients as workload requires.  The consumer technology client operates across a mix of sectors and we tackle diverse challenges for this business – e.g. brand development; creative development; innovation; proposition development.  We work with this client at a category level and a corporate level.

We do not require a candidate with in-depth knowledge of technology trends, for example (as product development work is only part of what we do with this client), but we do seek a candidate who would be comfortable spending the majority of his or her time on a client that makes technology devices (i.e. rather than working in FMCG).

The role would entail a good deal of international travel (for fieldwork as well as client meetings) and the right candidate would need to be keen on – and comfortable with – international work.  The ideal candidate should already have some experience working internationally, an interest in different cultures and a confidence interacting with an internationally diverse client base.

Key skills and experience:

  • Will already have solid experience and knowledge in the required areas
  • Experience of a wide range of qualitative research methods; combining solid research skills with a desire and aptitude to think strategically and commercially;
  • Focus is designing, running and driving projects day to day, conducting qualitative fieldwork and working with both more senior and junior people to deliver the insights;
  • First class moderation skills including plenty of experience of focus group moderation (including viewed groups in front of senior clients) and ethnographic work;
  • Ideally a comfort level with quantitative research, but qualitative is more of a focus for this role;
  • Excellent client handling skills, particularly in driving the client and projects (having the ability to influence in a collaborative way);
  • Excellent attention to detail and project control skills;
  • Ability to manage project teams (upwards and downwards);
  • Good and clear written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent analysis and presentation skills; and
  • Proposal writing skills.

Personal Attributes:

  • Strategic thinker;
  • Interested in the world around them (e.g. trends, people, culture, organisations);
  • Supportive team player (this is critical to fit in with Truth culture);
  • Confident and assertive manner;
  • Hardworking, positive and committed;
  • Dedication to excellent work;
  • Pro-active, open-minded and flexible – especially in relation to fieldwork;
  • Enthusiastic and down to earth;
  • A drive to nurture and help grow this key account;
  • Deeply engrained common sense; and
  • A positive, happy presence in the office.
