Power in Community – Mental Health Awareness Week 2025
Written by Joanna Dunbar-Webb, Senior People & Culture Partner
In today’s fast-paced, digitally driven world, it’s easy to feel disconnected, not only from one another, but also from our own bodies. We spend so much time in our heads, caught up in thoughts, worries, and constant to-do lists, that we may forget the simple, grounding experience of being present in our physical selves. Reconnecting with the body isn’t just a personal act of self-care; it’s a great way to uplift the mind and improve our overall wellbeing, especially when done with others, as a community. That’s powerful!
One beautiful, accessible way to foster this connection is through activities like a Steps Challenge, which we took part in at Instinctif & Truth during Mental Health Awareness Week 2025. Walking is something most of us can do, and it requires no fancy equipment or elaborate skill set. By tracking steps and setting shared goals, we create an opportunity to tune into our bodies, pay attention to how we feel, and experience movement as a form of medicine for both the body and the mind.
What makes a community step challenge especially impactful is the sense of collective motivation and shared experience. When we move together, whether physically side by side or virtually connected through step counts, we build a sense of belonging and camaraderie. It reminds us that wellbeing isn’t a solo pursuit, but something we nurture in connection with others. Encouraging support, friendly competition, and mutual celebration of milestones can uplift not just the body but also the spirit.
Physically, regular movement like walking boosts circulation, improves cardiovascular health, and reduces physical tension. Mentally, it stimulates the release of mood-enhancing chemicals like endorphins and serotonin. Even a short walk outdoors can help clear mind fog, lower anxiety, and enhance emotional resilience. As participants in a steps challenge become more aware of their physical selves, they often find it easier to quiet racing thoughts and return to the present moment.
Additionally, incorporating a community aspect brings accountability and joy into the practice. It transforms a simple daily habit into a collective act of care and encouragement. Over time, this fosters stronger social bonds, emotional support, and a shared sense of achievement, all of which are crucial for sustained wellbeing.
By reconnecting with our bodies through activities like a step challenge, and doing so together, we remind ourselves that wellness is rooted in connection with our own bodies, the natural world around us, and the people walking alongside us.
